The narration utilizes heavily colloquial and conversational language, although this language is often juxtaposed with more poetic linguistic constructions. For example, in the first paragraph, Yunior states in narration, “Ain’t a day that passes that you don’t want to press your face against that ass or bite the delicate sliding tendons of her neck” (47). The rhythm of the prose is propelled by intricate sentence structures and sparing use of commas, both of which are features common in Diaz’s work. These stylistic choices serve to illustrate Yunior’s perspective and highlight the opportunities for literary linguistic constructions as derived from colloquial and conversational language.
