Each faction wears clothing that is representative of their world views. For example, Abnegation wears all gray, while Amity wear yellow and bright clothing. The clothing that all of the characters wear are actually not by their choice, but by the direction of those in charge of their faction. Even when someone chooses the faction that they will serve in, their clothing is decided. So, in a greater sense, the clothing represents that one’s personal choice is often not a personal choice at all, but rather is a connection to one’s surroundings and society.
