The cross is a symbol of Dawn's role in Alyssa's death, though the cross's very existence would make people believe that Dawn was responsible in a way that she was not. The fact that Mary hid the cross, being careful not to touch it, and is now using it to torment Dawn are signs of Mary's intelligence.
