How did the town of Caboose get its name in the novel, All the Winters After?

The town of Caboose gets its name from the red caboose that sits at the end of the railroad line that used to travel there when it was still a booming fishing mecca called Herring Town. When the herring dried up and the train stopped coming, the caboose was abandoned and the townspeople turned it into a little museum.
