The novel is aimed at ninth grade and older audiences. The majority of the novel is written suitably for the younger end of that target audience. There is some violence, such as the executions that seem routine in this world. Some of the characters have violent confrontations, such as the fight between Leo, James, and Raoul. The scenes involving the bee attacks are also violent, and Odette kills Farrah during one of those. The author describes the death, including Farrah's dying gasps for breath. There are also curse words scattered throughout the novel, and some readers may object to these. They appear in dialogue and the author was obviously trying to make the dialogue seem more genuine. There are a few scenes involving sex, but these are presented in vague, general terms. The author leaves the scenes in such a way that it is not certain the characters are actually engaged in the sexual act.
