What was the cause of Mrs. Gonzales' death in the novel, All the Wind in the World?

Mrs. Gonzales is killed when she is thrown from a horse while out riding. There are, however, rumors that Bell throw a fit when her mother went riding, and that a dust devil sprang up, pulling her mother into the air and then dropping her to her death.
