Initially, Daniel's family could afford living in New York after arriving from Jamiaca, but when Daniel's mother lost her job, life in Flatbush became increasingly difficult. Daniel's mother then moved the family to Florida to save money. Throughout the novel, Daniel's memories occasionally feature scenes from his life in Flatbush.
