Aubrey's character symbolizes love. It is not until after Aubrey's death, that Daniel realizes he once loved and still loves Aubrey. The more the reader learns about her character through Daniel's memories, the more she understands the ways in which Aubrey also loved Daniel. She not only accepted him without question, but showed him grace and kindness throughout the years. When Daniel learns of her death, he fears that he has lost this love forever.
