Marquis’ belt represents his strong—through sometimes concealed—love for his older brother, Titus. Early in the novel, Titus confiscates the belt from his brother because of the knife hidden in its buckle. Titus eventually begins wearing the belt and, in the final pages of the novel, uses the belt to kill Royce Lazare. In this way, the knife mirrors Titus’ relationship with his brother. Although Marquis and Titus are not always close, Marquis displays a constant, quiet, unwavering concern for Titus.
