The owl that makes a brief appearance early in the novel serves as a harbinger of the violence and darkness that the Last Wolf brings to Charon. As Darlene and Titus spend time together in the wake of Jeff Spearman and Latrell Macdonald’s deaths, a “large horned owl” (80) appears at Titus’ window. He admits that the owl “made him think of dark portents and ill winds” (80). As the narrative continues, these premonitions quickly become true: the Last Wolf continues to inflict violence upon the residents of Charon County. The horned owl thus functions as an overt metaphor for the approaching terror.
