The novel opens with Stephen and Armand visiting in the Garden of Musée Rodin, in Paris. It is the same garden to which Stephen took Armand when Armand was still a child, visiting with Stephen in Paris. It is the place they love best in Paris and the place that Armand had wanted to propose to Reine-Marie until his godfather steered him to a more romantic location rather than a bench in front of a statue representing the Gates of Hell.
