What does Armand give to Daniel on his ninth birthday in the novel, All the Devils Are Here?

Armand gave the crucifix to Daniel, but Daniel stuffed the envelope in the back of a drawer because he thought his father was giving him money. When Daniel opens the envelope years later, he realizes it is the crucifix that Armand’s father gave him on his ninth birthday. When Stephen sees Daniel with the crucifix, he tells Daniel he hopes he will: “See this (the crucifix) for what it is …The truth” (432).
