hile the story is mostly chronological, there are three significant flashbacks that interrupt the narrative taking place in 1962 in order to explain the backstory of some major characters. Another flashback takes readers back to 1944, when the Soria family elders watched many of their family members die after interfering with a pilgrim's miracle. The third and final flashback in the novel brings readers information about Marisita's personal background, when her family moves her to San Antonio, Texas in 1955.
