In general, childbirth symbolizes the fragility and beauty of human life - Chung was born prematurely at Seattle's Hospital, and doctors considered her very existence a miracle. Consequently, her time spent at the hospital represents the fragility of human life. When Abigail is born 27 years later with one fist raised, her birth again celebrates the triumph of life.
