The novel’s prose is generally straightforward, without emotional embellishment. This prose style allows the facts of trauma and personal pain to become evident through frankly stated dialogue and narrative exposition. However, the emotional reality of that trauma does become more pronounced when characters are verbally recounting facts of the abuse they suffered. For example, Alex recalls “That time Dad smacked me in the kitchen and it hurt for a week after” (105). Alex is able to recall that incident without suffering an emotional breakdown, but it is still clear that incidents like that left her with deep emotional scars.
