Only one of the sections of the novel takes place in India, but it has an outsized impact on the novel's plot because it is where Sneha was born and raised, and where her parents currently reside. In many respects, Sneha's attachment to her cultural heritage in India makes it difficult for her to be accepting of her own queerness and to see through the aspects of American capitalism that are inequitable or unfair; she knows that her family expects her to marry a man, and she also knows that her parents would give anything to have access to the opportunities for financial uplift available in the United States. India, then, is present even in its absence, as Sneha's anxieties about her parents and their cultural values have an active impact on her decision-making in her romantic and personal life.
