Chosen is the small, rural town in New York that serves as the novel's primary setting. It is where the Hale's and Lawton's live, and where the Clare's eventually move to. It was primarily a farming town, but recent economic downturn has seen more wealthy commuters to the city buying up run down farms and gentrifying the area. The is a deep divide between the true local, blue-collar residents and the outsiders, the white-collar families, and wealthy newcomers.
