Ella's ghost symbolizes the persistence of tragedy through time and space, even after death. Even though no member of the Hale's family still live in the house, Ella's ghost haunts the Clare's, and specifically seems to try and reveal Catherine's endangered future to her. Without taking control over their own autonomy, the characters will be marked only by tragedy, even in the afterlife.
