Andrew met George and Joanne Foster before the events of this novel. They seemed like reasonable people before they robbed Andrew at gunpoint. He fought back and killed them both. This drives Andrew's decision to travel to Alexandria to tell their son Marc what happened. Andrew is searching for absolution or forgiveness, but he finds that Marc and his family are also dead.
