Why are Jamie and Andrew anxious to leave Fort Caroline in the novel, All That’s Left in the World?

During their brief tour through town, Jamie and Andrew notice there are no old people and no young women in Fort Caroline. They also see people throwing books from the library into bins, hinting that they might be destroying them. Andrew and Jamie quickly feel they are not safe and stay only one night before sneaking away.
