After Albert's surgery, why is he so depressed?

Albert is unable to live with the loss of his limb. He rarely speaks, and even talks about taking his own life. Kropp's suicidal depression over his amputation does not seem likely to go away in time; he has permanently become a "cripple," and the war has forever scarred his body and psyche.
