What was the main reason for Rick writing this memoir?

The main reason that Rick wrote the memoir was to show his mother that she was not a failure. He knows that she blames herself for the tough life that her sons led. He sees her as a hero, and he wants her to know it. He also wants to give his father a chance to answer for himself even though he is dead.
