What was the area like and what were the people like where Rick and his parents grew up?

It was the foothills of the Appalachian mountains along the Alabama-Georgia line. It was a beautiful place where the people were true southerners. But they were poor during the years that Rick's parents grew up. They are religious, hard working, hard drinking people.
