How poor was Margaret while raising her small children?

Margaret was so poor that she could not live in a place of her own, so she lived with her brother, Ed. She could not afford much food for her family, so she ate the scraps that the children left behind. They all visited the town dump in search of treasures that Margaret could use or sell.
