The image of the Last Supper represents the way in which Goettreider has taken the place of God in Tom's old reality, and how science has taken the place of religion. Though the painting is never mentioned explicitly, the image of the 16 witnesses to Goettreider's experiment are a common source of inspiration for painting. This serves as an illusion to the Last Supper, putting Goettreider in the place of Jesus. In the language and culture of society, Goettreider is treated as a God.
