How is the concept of "back holes" used as a metaphor in the book, All Our Wrong Todays: A Novel?

Tom continually uses black holes as a metaphor for the pain of loss. They suck up all light that comes near them, which is appropriate for the feeling of loss; it feels as though all of one's happiness and interest in life are being sucked away.
