What seems to be the conflict between Chris and his mother?

Chris is in love with Ann Deever, his brother Larry's fiance. Larry was killed in the war years before, something his mother doesn't believe and hasn't accepted. Thus, she will not accept Chris' love for Ann, or his desire to marry her.
