The swimming pool, referred to as the “black hole”, used to contain water is symbolic of the misery that has supplanted happier memories of home (59). Once a scene of birthday parties and family fun, it has been dry since Salahudin found his father drunkenly “pissing in the pool” – an event which both symbolizes and precipitates the end to Sal’s childhood (60). Misbah promised that they would refill it when times get better, so its emptiness brings home the finality of her death and the bleakness of the future.
