Gandalf the kite, the kite which Noor and Salahudin fly in Veil Meadows, symbolizes their temporary escape from reality. Like the kite rising above the ground before succumbing to gravity, they enjoy a moment of elation in each other’s arms, but Noor cannot escape her uncle, and Sal cannot evade the consequences of his actions. The kite resembles “a wizard with arms outstretched,” but it provides no magical powers or fantastical solutions (231). As Noor reflects, “snacks and a wizard kite” cannot protect them against police guns (247).
