The city of Quetta represents hope and resilience. A “place in the clouds,” which was completely rebuilt after its destruction by earthquake, it represents the importance of starting again and rising above life’s setbacks (172). When the optimistic Misbah embarks on a new life in America, she remembers visiting Quetta with her beloved father. Like her new home, it is “dry and dusty in the summer,” but the surrounding mountains are “a promise of something pure” (172). Quetta is also a symbol for Noor, who survives an actual earthquake as a child, going on to overcome many further trials and refusing to accept defeat.
