The prison and county jail are in Friarsfield, California. The author establishes a link between school and jail, with Noor noting that the lockup “sounds – and smells – like Juniper High’s girls’ locker room,” and later thinking that going back to school “sounds about as appealing as the county jail” (260, 291).
