Art Britman, Ashlee’s cousin and a fellow high school student, is described as “the nicest drug dealer who’s ever lived” (9). He is a charming character whose easygoing attitude makes his illegal activities seem more harmless, and less risky than they are. The novel never presents Art as thoroughly sinister or insincere, despite the business success and acumen that are so at odds with his seeming innocence. In Sal’s eyes he remains no worse than superficial, weak-willed and foolish.
