Fire foreshadows great loss and the destruction of the family standing around it. Uncontrolled fire symbolizes destruction, danger and even loss of life. It is only controlled that fire is a source of warmth and comfort. After the loss of their home, the von Reisen family goes camping and manages to explode a propane stove.
