Jacob killed himself seven years prior to the time of the novel by stepping in front of a train. Like Elf, he dealt constantly with the feeling of overwhelming sorrow, and Elf feels his sorrow. Jacob often retreated to his room when he felt defeated by life, and his behavior became a model for Elf.
