The author tells the story of Jenny's rape and therapy, along with Forrester's involvement, through chronological order. The story starts with Jenny's rape, even though she is not a client of Forrester's until about 8 months later. Forrester allows each of the characters to tell their stories in their own words, which are separated by italicized print in each chapter. Readers learn about the setting through the narrator's descriptions of the people and the town. In addition to the 36 chapters, the book concludes with an Author's note and Acknowledgements.
