Jenny's carving symbolizes the deep, below the surface scar that rape can cause. Jenny and Forrester both have such a scar. Even when Jenny cannot recall details of her rape, the scar is there as a constant reminder of former pain. The same is true with Forrester, even though his memory of the rape was not erased from his memory. Despite growing up and moving beyond his childhood rape, Forrester is still deeply affected by his carving scar, a physical reminder not only of his pain, but of his family's shameful secret. The fact that his parents did not handle his rape by reporting it to police and treating it like a crime, left him to believe the incident carried shame with it.
