Almost all the action takes place in locations that emphasize, and allow for manifestations of, the wealth and social status of the book's main characters. The island of Manhattan (with its high-end department stores like Barneys), the island of St. Barts (a vacation retreat for the rich and famous, to use a somewhat cliché phrase), and the recreation retreats of Upper New York State are all defined, as places and therefore as settings, by being frequented by people with money and social standing.
