Instead of chapters, the novel relies on vignettes, small snapshots of Andrea's life, each adding a different element to her life story and character. The use of vignettes allows the writer to be more fluid in how the story is presented, as there is less need to be bound by a linear structure. The author is free to jump from one time to another without causing a major disruption, as the vignettes stand mostly independently, Andrea's emotions and story accumulating piece by piece as the book progresses.
