Wakarusa is the central location in the novel. Krissy and Billy Jacobs grow up in the small town and attend high school together. Krissy starts casually dating Billy after high school, but she is also sleeping with Luke Davies. She gets pregnant with Luke's twins, but she marries Billy because he is wealthy, and she is tired of being so poor. Years later, Luke's niece, Margot, moves in across the street from the Jacobs' house with her parents and becomes best friends with January. When January is murdered, Margot is horrified. She leaves town, but never forgets what happened to her best friend. When she returns 25 years later, Margot investigates the crime and uncovers two murderers and dozens of secrets.
