When Anjelou pulled off the road, she was filled with mixed emotions, though she didn't proceed to Almina Castle itself. Almina Castle was a fort where slaves were held, and the thought of it both disturbed and haunted her. She pictured her relatives chained together within its walls, she felt their exhaustion, and honored the way they refused to show pain or cry in front of their captors.
