Roughly 30 minutes after the narrator sets out on her cross-country trip to New York, she stops in Monrovia to fill up on gas. Instead of continuing her drive after leaving the gas station, the narrator impulsively rents a motel room at the Excelsior and ends up staying in Monrovia for the next two-and-a-half weeks. While here, she redecorates her motel room, falls in love with Davey, and largely departs from reality. Monrovia is not a charming or exciting place to be. However, the location feels divorced from the narrator's real life in Los Angeles, and therefore grants her the ability to entertain her fantasies and live in an imaginary world of her own making.
