Shortly after renting the room, the narrator decides to have it redecorated in the style of "Le Bristol in Paris" (46). She hires Davey's wife Claire to complete the redecoration project, and ultimately pays her the entire $20,000 she received from the whiskey company to do so. The room is perfect once Claire is done. She papers the wall with "rich botanical prints with jewel-toned parrots in tropical trees" (47). She carpets the floor with "a Grand Parterre Sarouk carpet made of New Zealand wool" (47). She buys special towels and soaps for the room, too. Room 321 therefore becomes a realization of the narrator's fantasies, and her ultimate refuge.
