Kenny is the name of one of the author's fraternity brothers when he was in college. They had a particularly close relationship, which is the main reason why, when Kenny died, the author found it particularly upsetting. Kenny's death is portrayed in the book as being one of the main triggers for his reconsideration of the meaning of death, both physical death and the more metaphorical deaths, i.e. of spirit or of identity, associated with being Black and / or queer.
