Virginia Union University is the place where the author acquired his post-high school education. He describes himself as looking forward to being away from home, and as such feeling freer to both come to terms with, and act upon, his identity as a queer person. In other words, he looked forward to being able to express and experience his sexuality, and to coming out. He also describes himself as feeling less able to realize those goals than he thought he was going to be, and feeling both disappointed and self-repressive as a result.
