Alpha Phi Alpha is the all-black fraternity that the author joined when he was at Virginia Union. It was, he says, the place where he learned that it was possible and acceptable for him to express the kind of masculinity he felt, even though it was not necessarily the masculinity that most members of the fraternity demonstrated. The fraternity, therefore, was the place where he made the thematically significant discovery of the value of community outside his family.
