The author's mother, who is not identified by name anywhere in the narrative, is portrayed as being loving and supportive. The author's depiction of her suggests that she was fiercely determined to make sure her son, whom she seems to have sensed early on was queer, lived a life that was supportive, protective, and loving. She is also portrayed as being quite firm and direct when necessary, but always with an undertone of wanting the author to make sure that her ultimate goal was to make sure he stayed safe, healthy, and strong in himself.
