The author's father, who is not identified by name anywhere in the book, is portrayed as being somewhat reserved, but nonetheless being supportive and understanding when it came to interactions with his queer son. This, the author suggests, came as a result of having made some mistakes in parenting an older queer son from a previous relationship - see "G.G.," below. The author also portrays his father as being generous, when it came to birthdays and other family occasions, and also as being something of a pack rat, having difficulty throwing things away when they were past the point of usefulness.
