In prison, Caesar is quickly forced to abandon his pretenses of kindness, and he gradually develops a hardened exterior. This allows him to endure life in prison even after his only allies are murdered or lose their minds, and he eventually manages to serve out his sentence and be released into the world. Caesar's struggles to adjust and assimilate are punctuated by an event in which his family misapprehends him as someone dangerous and untrustworthy, revealing that Caesar's life experiences as a prisoner have more or less forced him to become a more violent version of himself.
