According to hooks, the childhood home is where one first learns about love. It is in the home that one is modeled relationships, whether they be healthy or dysfunctional. In the childhood home, one also begins to develop one's sense of self-esteem and self-worth, which are also important components in learning to love oneself and others. hooks uses her own childhood home as an environment in which she did not feel loved and experienced both abuse and dysfunction. It was in her childhood home that she first internalized negative messages about love, such as confusing it for affection and care, and believing that love can exist alongside abuse. It was also in her childhood home that hooks developed wounds that prevented her from fully loving and which she needed to work through and heal from in order to be able to give and receive true love.
