Esther is one of the narrator's repeat patients in the emergency room. The first time Esther shows up, she tells the narrator that she is suffering from Shoah grief. Although the narrator acts confused, distracted, and disinterested, Esther goes on to tell her all about her family's traumatic past. Months later, while the narrator is in Moldova, she finds herself preoccupied with thoughts of Esther. Upon returning from her trip, she sees Esther again. This time, the narrator is better able to understand the woman, and even considers confiding in her.
